Even if you have never shot a rifle before, you will be able to
safely handle, shoot, clean, and store a rifle after you complete this course. If you are already familiar with rifles,
this course can help you become a more
accurate and safer rifle owner.
Everything is provided in this class. Guns, ammunition, cleaning
supplies, and even eye and ear protection. You do not need to own a rifle to take this course. In fact, this
class teaches you how to choose your first rifle. If you already own
a rifle, you are welcome to use it both during the classroom and range session.
Please Note: Absolutely NO live ammunition is allowed in the classroom at any time.

NRA Basic Rifle class teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and
attitude for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting. This course
is divided into two sessions). The first day is classroom based with
instruction, demonstrations, participation, and practical hands-on
activities. This first day typically runs about 6-8 hours. The
second day you will spend on the range applying your newly learned
skills. This includes shooting from a variety of positions with your
choice of several action types.
Students learn NRA’s rules for safe gun handling, rifle parts and
operation, ammunition, shooting fundamentals, range rules, shooting
from multiple positions (bench and standing),
cleaning the rifle, and continued opportunities for skill development.
This course is thorough, low-pressure, low-stress, and fun. You can ask questions
at any time! The class size is a maximum student/instructor ratio of 4:1 in the classroom, and 2:1 on the range to
ensure you get personalized, focused attention as your knowledge and
skills grow. You will never be asked to do anything that
you are uncomfortable doing. You learn at your pace.
Students will receive the Basics of Rifle Shooting handbook, NRA
Gun Safety Rules card, Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification
booklet. Upon successful completion of a Basics of Rifle Shooting Student Examination
and successful completion of the course, students also receive course
Prerequisites for NRA Basic Rifle
Although there are no pre-requisites or age restrictions for the
course, a general minimum age suggestion would be 12 years old. This
may vary significantly depending upon the specific student's maturity
level and attention span.
Classroom Session: Located in Keystone
Range Session: Summit County Shooting Range
Classroom Session: July 13 or July 27, 2019 from 8:30 AM to about 4:00 PM.
Range Session: Approx. 2 hours on the following Sunday at the Summit County Shooting Range. The specific time will be determined in class on Saturday.
The total cost is $75 payable to the "Summit Range Association" on the first day of class (cash or check).
